LEMBUS FORESTS ECOTOURISM AND LIVELIHOOD IMPROVEMENT PROJECT (LELIP)- Based in Koibatek District in the Rift Valley of Kenya LELIP worked with 2,500 families in establishment of a community ecotourism programme, whose purpose was to raise income and promote forest conservation for villagers of the over 12,000 hectares of forested land that the district owns. This project was a partnership between the Koibatek County Council, The Kenya Forest Department, 10 local CBO’s and with funding from The Netherlands Committee for IUCN (Netherlands) and Kagoka Foundation (USA). LELIP established an ecotourism and cultural site, whose management is in the hands of community. Visitation to the site presently stands at 1,500 local and foreign visitors.
